Think back to the Industrial Revolution and the famous “Rainhill Trials” of 1829, this was the legendary event that shaped the earliest beginnings of world-wide rail transport. Designers of steam locomotives were invited to compete in the Rainhill Trials for the prize of a contract to supply engines to haul the trains of the new Liverpool & Manchester Railway, the world first inter-city main line for passengers and freight.
Each entry was required to run a distance of some 70 miles without a break, hauling a specified load back and forth over a 1 ¾ mile (2.8km.) section of track, the “Rainhill level”, to prove its power and reliability. The week-long event, said to have been witnessed by some 10,000 spectators on the first day, was won convincingly by Stephensons ROCKET designed and built by George Stephenson, his son Robert and their partner, Henry Booth.
The ROCKET averaged 16 mph (25.7km/hr) over its 20 return trips, and recorded a maximum speed of 29 mph (46.7km/hr) . Eight more ROCKETs were built for the opening of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway in 1830. The ROCKET embodied several of the features that were seen in many, if not most, of the locomotives that followed them, including the multi-tube Stephenson type boiler, with a water-jacketed firebox, outside cylinders coupled directly to the driving wheels and improved blast pipes in the chimney to increase combustion in the firebox.
The O.S. 1/11.3 scale ROCKET is a faithfully scaled-down replica in design and running characteristics that cannot fail to bring a sense of the magic of the past to its lucky owner.
