The History

Orenstein & Koppel was founded in 1876. Initially, production started not with locomotives, but with small scale manufacture of railway equipment, such as wagons for the construction or manufacturing industry. The business prospered and exports expanded to the extent that Arthur Koppel started procuring railway equipment and founded his own sales company. After Koppel passed away in 1909, both companies decided to merge to become “Orenstein & Koppel, Arthur Koppel A.G.” The name “Arthur Koppel” was dropped from the merged company name after World War I and the name was officially changed to Orenstein & Koppel in 1920.
Starting in 1876 and ending in 1961, a total of some 14,600 locomotives were said to have been manufactured. The rise in production from around 1906 to 1926 was particularly rapid, and in terms of quantity, the numbers exceeded those of other long established companies such as Krauss. Large locomotives for main lines were not manufactured, in part due to limited manufacturing facilities, and production was kept to tank locomotives.
